Steps to set timing on a BMW E36: Step 1: Set crankshaft timing to TDC The easiest way to set the crankshaft to TDC (top dead center) is to line up the mark on the timing cover with the mark on the harmonic balancer. Both of these marks, when lined up, will indicate that cylinder #1 is in the TDC location.
